Wireless Network Access

The Jacksonville Public Library is pleased to offer free wireless Internet access to patrons with appropriately equipped wireless devices. The JPL Wireless Network has been designed to support a wide-range of 802.11a, 802.11b (Wi-Fi), and 802.11g notebooks, PDAs, and other devices.

There are many advantages to using the JPL Wireless Network, including:

  • No waiting for a free PC
  • No enforced time limits -– connect as long as you like
  • Wider range of access –- you can connect from anywhere in the building
  • High speed access
  • Download and/or save files permanently on your own device

However, there are some limitations:

  • No printing services are currently available -– however, you may download to floppy or USB/thumb drive and use one of the library's terminals to print.
  • Signal strength varies due to location in Library and number of users
  • Wi-Fi is less secure than wired access -- The Internet is a public communications network, which means that there can be untrusted parties between you and anybody you communicate with. WiFi unplugs the Internet and makes personal security risks more visible. WiFi users need to educate themselves about these risks, and take steps to secure their personal information. Cautious WiFi users may choose not to transmit their credit card information and passwords while using any WiFi "hotspot", including the Library's. The Library cannot assure the safety of your data when you use either our wired or wireless Internet access.

In order to use the JPL Wireless Network, you will need:

  • A laptop with a wireless network interface card (NIC), or
  • A wireless device configured to use the Library's Internet connection -- Wireless hardware and software varies as to the operating systems you may use on your laptop or other wireless device, so we can't give you precise instructions. You are responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment.
  • A charged battery -- the library has some accessible electrical outlets near some tables, but not all.
  • Compatible headphones -- if you plan to use audio files.

Access to the JPL Wireless Network is available during normal library operating hours.

For information on connecting (SSIDs, etc.), please ask at the Circulation Desk once in the library. This information will not be given over the phone or by e-mail.
